MM#18: Statue of the Unknown Woman
Scantly covered by the tatters she calls her wardrobe
her astonished soul hovers over her statue
that is stained by passing
Could we exchange swords
for the unbroken stem of this lily,
lift once more
clear eyes to her gaze of curious amazement?
In mystery we prepare to encounter this
Statue of the Unknown Woman
with her slender wrists of gleaming marble.
We prepare to lift tongues to taste
the waters that flow down from her pedestal.
As we seek for her, she seeks for us
in the hollows of our own weeping.
let the tears fall in rivulets
for she is the mystery among us
and none can claim
her astonished soul,
none can speak her name
for she holds Earth and Eyes together,
Stone, Sun and Sand.
Thus swiftly adored
we back out of the shadow
of the mystery
her soul flits between her breasts
upon the brow
of this Statue of the Unknown Woman.
